The Swiss Red Cross SRC is an organization characterized by its principles, its long experience, the breadth of its activity and its integration in a worldwide movement. The SRC was established in 1866 and is the oldest humanitarian organization in Switzerland. Originally established to support the army medical corps, in the course of its long history new activities have frequently been added: promoting and monitoring training in nursing, health promotion, social integration and rescue services. The SRC was initially active primarily in Switzerland. Since the 1960s, its international work has been extended to include systematic development cooperation. In addition, the SRC has always cared for refugees, and since 1981 is an officially recognized refugee agency.
From 1893 to 1991, the SRC published magazines with different titles and different designs. These provide insight into the operation and development of the SRC and the Red Cross movement in general.
