In the first issue of Acta Tropica in 1944, the founding editors wrote in their foreword: 'As one thought often evokes another, so the production of the new review Acta Tropica is more or less due to the foundation of the Swiss Tropical Institute in Basel. Still, notwithstanding the practically common history of their origin, the new review is intended to be not merely the organ of the Tropical Institute, but an independent international scientific review treating the whole sphere of tropical science.
In 1977, with volume 34, a change of publisher took place. The scope of Acta Tropica was revised and condensed to Biomedical Sciences relevant to human health, including veterinary medicine and biology in the tropics. In addition, peer reviewing of submitted papers was introduced, and the scientific standard of the journal was substantially improved.
Since its founding in 1943, the Swiss Tropical Institute (STI), now Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) has become a world-renowned Institution for teaching, research and services in the field of International Health Development.
